Info
Whilst 2008 sees Natalie presenting the first series of So You Think You Can Dance in Australia, the show is three seasons old in America (having first aired there in summer 2005). The popularity for the American version triggered spin offs in countries such as Australia, Germany and Canada.
So You Think You Can Dance has captured Australia as it has the US. Here's a quick comparison between the latest US and Australian series and how Natalie stacks up as a host and her influences on the show.
Format
The format of the US and Australian versions is similar. The opening titles and advert break are almost identical. The same music is used and they differ only in the addition of "Australia" added to the So You Think You Can Dance title graphic.
Both versions begin with auditions in various cities to gather a group of dancers which are then broken down over a few weeks to deliver the finalists.
In the audition phase of the show, both highlight dancers with interesting stories through interviews and self documentation. The US show focuses a little more on the weaker performances compared to the Australian technique of documenting those who will succeed in the auditions.
Judges
As tends to be the case with reality styled competitions, the judges in both shows provide strong criticism where needed. The harshness was dialed down however the Australian judges are gentler at times focusing more on critique rather than Simon Cowell styled put downs favoured on the US show at times.
Presenting
A comparison between Cat Deeley and Natalie Bassingthwaighte as presenters is difficult given the gulf between the two in terms of experience.
Cat presented the second series of So You Think You Can Dance US and is a veteran of presenting having been involved with shows like CD:UK and Stars In Your Eyes in the UK.
Despite several years in the acting / stage environment So You Think You Can Dance Australia is Natalie's first presenting role and she does lack a little of the natural flair and relaxed attitude when a comparison is made.
